Digital Performer and Waves RTAS plug-ins

When using Waves RTAS plug-ins in Digital Performer 5.12 under DAE on an Intel system, Digital Performer will crash on quit. This does not affect MOTU Audio System (MAS) users or DAE users on PowerPC systems. We are working with Waves to resolve this issue.

As new versions of DAE become available, please check back at motu.com for compatibility information.

What is Volta?

Volta is a virtual instrument plug-in that turns your audio interface into a voltage control interface.

Any hardware device with a control voltage (CV) input can be placed under precise digital control from your favorite audio workstation software. You can play and automate modulars, analog synths - even effects processors.

Imagine being able to play and automate your CV-equipped analog gear from Digital Performer, Logic Pro, or Live with the same level of control, precision and convenience as a virtual instrument.

Here are just a few examples of what you can do with Volta:

  • Perform MIDI sequencing with external modular synths with sample-accurate precision (if your host sequencer supports sample-accurate MIDI).
  • Automatically calibrate and tune oscillators with the click of a button.
  • Use ramp automation in your host audio software to control filters, envelope generators, effects processors and other voltage-controlled external gear.
  • Apply LFOs, step sequencers and pattern sequencers to CV inputs and tempo-sync them to your host software timeline.

Whether you’re a seasoned modular synthesizer devotee or simply a computer-based studio owner dreaming of adding that rich, coveted sound only true analog synths can deliver, Volta finally enables you to easily incorporate CV-equipped analog gear into your computer-based studio with all the control, precision and convenience of a virtual instrument.

Volta feature highlights

  • Standard virtual instrument plug-in that turns an audio interface with DC-coupled outputs into a voltage control interface.
  • Lets you control external modular synths or other CV-equipped gear from your computer.
  • Works with Digital Performer, Logic Pro, Live and other Audio Unit instrument hosts that support side chain outputs.
  • Works with any MOTU audio interface equipped with TRS outputs, including the 24io with 24 TRS outputs, expandable to 96.
  • Familiar, easy-to-use instrument plug-in operation within your favorite host software.
  • Provides 24 control outputs per plug-in instance. Use as many instances as needed.
  • Converts MIDI track data to control voltages to play modulars, analog synthesizers and other CV-equipped sound sources.
  • Sample-accurate MIDI playback with supporting host software (such as DP).
  • Provides seven different control source types, including MIDI notes, MIDI controller data and audio track automation, plus tempo-synced sources such as LFOs, clock pulses and trigger/pattern sequencers.
  • Provides one-click pitch and octave calibration per oscillator using either Hz/V or V/oct tuning standards.
  • View at a glance the total calibrated range for each oscillator/interface combination.
  • Sync multiple drum machines, arpeggiators and other clock destinations with independent PPQ resolution for each device.

System requirements

  • Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or later
  • A digital audio workstation application that hosts MAS (MOTU Audio System) or Audio Unit (AU) instrument plug-ins and supports multiple instrument sidechain outputs, such as Digital Performer, Logic, or Live.
  • An audio interface with DC-coupled outputs, such as any MOTU FireWire, USB2, or PCI audio interface with quarter-inch TRS outputs.
  • The proper cable type for your interface.
  • External audio hardware that responds to control voltage signals, such as modular analog synthesizers, vintage monosynths, etc.
  • A free USB port for the iLok USB key. Note that if you have multiple products which use iLoks for authorization you can consolidate multiple authorizations onto a single iLok; see this tech note.

If you have two iLok protected products, such as MachFive and MX4, you can store both authorizations on one iLok.

You can transfer authorizations from one iLok to another if you register both iLoks at iLok.com. Note that iLok.com is not a MOTU website.
Transferring authorizations onto one iLok is not limited to two MOTU products. For example, you can transfer your MachFive authorization to an iLok for a third-party plug-in.
It is also OK to run both iLok keys on a USB hub if this is more convenient for you.

Now you can import, edit, synthesize, process and play multi-sample instruments, loops and phrases in MachFive's unified, intuitive environment.

Unprecedented compatibility and interoperability

MachFive 2 is the complete solution for sample library playback and sound design, with unprecedented compatibility and interoperability with all major plug-in hosts, sound libraries and sample formats on both Mac and Windows. Even if you use multiple platforms, hosts and library formats, MachFive 2 is the last sampler you'll ever need to buy.

32GB of included sounds

MachFive 2 includes four dual-layer, 8GB soundbank DVDs that contain approximately 32GB of world-class sounds. The DVDs include a staggering array of multi-sample instruments, loops and phrases, including premium material recorded at 192kHz. DVD 2 provides a stunning 24-bit 96kHz 8GB sampled grand piano. DVD 3 supplies surround instruments and loops. DVD 4 provides the VSL™ Orchestra MachFive Edition: an exclusive collection of expressive orchestra sounds from the most respected name in orchestra sound libraries

Loop Lab™

MachFive combines the worlds of loops and multi-sample instruments. Trigger both together within MachFive's intuitive environment. The unique Loop Lab lets you freely and easily edit REX, ACID and Apple GarageBand Loops, or create your own. Simply Drag audio files into the Loop Lab - you can even drop in audio that has not yet been sliced. Instantly map slices. Find or set a tempo. Apply destructive or non-destructive sample level editing. Assemble multiple tempo-synced loops side by side. Time-stretch with no artifacts. Then set AutoPlay to trigger the audio when you press play in your sequencer application, or trigger each slice from your MIDI controller. You can even drag both MIDI and audio files from Loop Lab to your desktop or tracks in your sequencer.

Collaborate across platforms

No other sampler can match the across-the-board compatibility and interoperability of MachFive 2. MachFive 2 supports every major software instrument plug-in format platform (MAS, VST, AU, RTAS and DXi), as well as stand-alone application operation on both Mac OS X (with full Universal Binary support for G5 and Intel CPUs) and Windows (XP and Vista, 32 and 64 bit). You can effortlessly move from one platform to another and collaborate with colleagues who use different audio software or even different computer operating systems. For example, you might write and track in Digital Performer or Logic on the Mac, and then move to Pro Tools running under Windows for mixing. Just save a MachFive 2 performance in DP or Logic, load it into Pro Tools, along with your MIDI tracks, and you are ready to go. MachFive 2 is the first truly Universal Software Sampler.

Compatibility with all major sample libraries

MachFive 2 opens and reads all major sampler library and audio file formats directly - even legacy sampler discs like Kurzweil K2xxx and the Roland S-700 series. Your computer can't read these discs, but MachFive 2 can. There is no need for time consuming file format conversion. Just load presets directly from the disc. You can even create and save disc images to any hard drive, and MachFive 2 will read directly from the disc image as if the CD were in the drive.

Special attention has been paid to compatibility with GigaSampler libraries, especially keyswitching and "dimensions". Open your GigaSampler, EXS24, or Kontakt instruments in MachFive 2 directly and preset characteristics such as key switch, release, and trigger-speed sample switching are faithfully preserved and ready to go.

Upgrade to MachFive 2 from GigaStudio, Kontakt, SampleTank and others

If you are an owner of GigaStudio, Kontakt, Structure, SampleTank or other eligible virtual sampler product, you can now upgrade to MachFive 2 for only $295. This unprecedented new upgrade offer allows you to step up to MachFive 2 at a savings of $200. There's never been a better time to switch to MachFive 2.

Plug-in or stand-alone operation

MachFive 2 supports all current instrument plug-in standards on both Mac and Windows platforms. Perhaps you run a commercial studio that offers several different sequencing packages to its clients. Because MachFive 2 runs in any Mac or Windows sequencer that supports virtual instruments, you now have the same sounds and instruments available, regardless of which sequencer you use.

MachFive 2 is also directly compatible with notation software titles such as Finale and Sibelius.

Because MachFive 2 works in stand-alone mode, you can take your laptop computer to a gig, load your sounds, and use MachFive 2 for live performance.

Optimized for efficiency

MachFive 2 provides disk streaming on a per instrument basis for efficient memory usage. Enable disk streaming for the included 8GB Grand Piano, so only 40MB of RAM is used to load the instrument. Disable disk streaming for shorter samples, such as percussion instruments, to maximize hard drive efficiency.

Effects and synthesizer parameters (LFOs, envelopes, etc.) are modular, allowing for maximum CPU efficiency.

A new standard

For sound design, live performance, music production, or broadcast, MachFive 2 delivers the perfect balance of superb audio quality, ease of operation, and across-the-board compatibility.

Or load it as a plug-in that saves all settings with your host software documents for instant recall.

Feature Highlights

Convolution reverb
Convolution is a process where the characteristics of a real acoustic space are directly sampled, such as a cave, forest, canyon, theater, cathedral or concert hall. The resulting impulse response (IR) consists of an audio file that holds the actual sound decay characteristics of the acoustic space. By sophisticated signal processing, that impulse response can then be applied to the loops, phrases and instrument presets in the Ethno Instrument, making them sound exactly as if it were being heard in the acoustic environment captured by the impulse response.

Convolution reverb is the most realistic type of reverb ever developed because it faithfully reproduces the actual characteristics of real acoustic spaces.

The Ethno Instrument provides a wide variety of convolution reverb spaces, plus 'fast' reverbs that work well on slower computers:
Here is a comparison between a completely dry vocal phrase (with no reverb) and the same phrase with convolution reverb applied to it (the reverb preset is from a cathedral):
Here's the same phrase with reverb (wet):

Dynamic performance with Expert Mode
Expert mode lets you dynamically add, remove and stack (layer) multiple instruments, loops and phrases as you play them from your MIDI controller. Bring instruments in and out, on the fly, using key switches, velocity ranges or note ranges. You can even crossfade between instruments by sending continuous MIDI data (expression controllers) from a mod wheel or other device. Ethno Instrument truly is a powerful real-time performance tool that delivers an entire world of sounds to your fingertips.

Realistic expression with MIDI controllers

Achieve incredibly realistic, dynamic performances from the Ethno Instrument using MIDI continuous controller data from your mod wheel, foot pedal, automated fader control surface or other MIDI control source. Most of the Ethno Instrument's parameters can be mapped to external control, giving you hands-on, real-time expressive control over your sounds. You can even assign MIDI modulation to crucial individual parameters such as filter cutoff frequency for even deeper expressiveness.

Scroll Wheel Support

For additional convenience and fast operation, the Ethno Instrument supports the scroll wheel on your mouse. Use it to quickly adjust settings or choose an instrument.

MX4 Overview

Meet the new instrument plug-in powerhouse for your studio. Inspired by legendary subtractive synthesizers, MX4 combines several core synthesis techniques in a unified, hybrid synthesis engine that delivers fresh and vintage sounds alike.
As you explore its many banks and hundreds of presets, you'll soon rely on MX4 as your "go-to" instrument. Fat basses, nasty leads, analog pads, vintage electronica — it's all at your fingertips and conveniently saved with your host application projects for instant recall.

Tweaking sounds is fast and easy with clearly presented controls in one window — but with a depth and sophistication true synth programmers will appreciate. Create your music with pristine 32-bit sound quality, unlimited voices and unlimited polyphony (as much as your host computer allows). MX4's flexible programming and advanced modulation architecture provide the intimacy of a vintage synth, the flexibility of a modular synth, and the innovation of a virtual synth.

Version 2 Features

Some folks say that the best things in life are free. In the case of our upgrade path to MX4 Version 2, they're absolutely right. MX4 is our unique multi-synth instrument, and it has quickly established itself as a must-have synth plug-in for any desktop studio, whether you're just getting started or adding to a growing collection.
Version 2 is packed with major new features and hundreds of new presets that instantly expand your sonic palette. Best of all, MX4 Version 2 is a free upgrade to all MX4 Version 1 users! It all starts with the pulsating, rhythmic textures of MX4 V2's new Pattern Gate...

More built-in effects

Built-in effects allow you to incorporate the effect into your programmed presets, rather than having to apply them separately. MX4 Version 2 adds a flanger, phaser and all-important reverb. All of these effects are CPU efficient and add a broad new sonic palette for you to work with.

Stereo Detune

Try this: load a mono preset in MX4 Version 2 and listen to it — a pad for example. Now click the stereo button and play it again. Hear how it widens? Now drag the Stereo Detune slider to about 30%. What you'll now hear is nothing short of huge, spread across the stereo field. Now set the Unison Multiplier to 4, and get ready for *really* huge...

Anti-aliased (band-limited) wavetables

MX4 Version 2 gives you the best of both worlds: MX4 version 1's classic wavetables are perfect for that sought-after, searing aliasing effect. And Version 2's new anti-aliased wavetables give you the pure, pristine sound of every included wavetable, even in the highest registers.

Hundreds of new factory presets

Version 2 delivers hundreds of new presets in a wide range of categories, neatly organized into sub-menus for easy browsing. Many take full-advantage of the hottest new features, like the pattern gate, arpeggiator and pattern sequencer.

Mods page

The Mods page represents an entirely new dimension in multi-synth programming. You now have unprecedented control over the sounds you can sculpt and design in MX4, all just a click away.

Pattern gate

Pulsating, rhythmic, hypnotic, groovetronic—these are just some of the words that can be used to describe the rhythm-based effects in MX4 Version 2. Leading off the many new rhythm-based features is the Pattern Gate, which slices MX4's synth section into programmable pulses that are tempo-locked to your host application. Control pulse shape, pattern, length and swing.

Arpeggiator

MX4 Version 2's arpeggiator gives you everything you need to quickly achieve the arpeggiator effect you are looking for, including the "as played" setting, which lets you control the order in which every note is played. Or go "hands off" with the hold feature, which continues to play the arpeggio even after you let go of the keys.

Trigger sequencer

Trigger an MX4 envelope rhythmically with your host application's tempo. Program any pattern you wish.

Gate and effects topology

Graphically arrange the signal flow of the synth section through MX4's two effects modules and the pattern gate. It's as simple as clicking and dragging.

Enhanced modifier key shortcuts

MX4 provides an innovative, "hands-on" approach to programming modulation sources and destination by clicking directly on the controls in the window with several intuitive modifier key shortcuts. The manipulation is so direct, you'll feel like you are touching the sound itself.

Pattern sequencer

The pattern sequencer gives you the means to rhythmically modulate just about any parameter in MX4, with pin-point control over every step of the pattern. Sure, you can apply it to oscillator pitch, but that's just the beginning. The Pattern Sequencer can be applied to any continuously modulateable parameter, like filters, effects parameters, wavetable index—you name it. This feature alone provides a entire universe of possibilities to explore.

Envelope follower

The envelope follower brings the outside world into MX4 by transforming the amplitude of any external audio signal into a control signal for use inside MX4, as either a modulation source or shaper. Guitar FX and filter FX are examples to get your ideas flowing, but MX4's modulation architecture is so flexible, you'll quickly discover entirely unique ways to dynamically interact with MX4's multi-synth engine.

New shapers

MX4 ships with five new shapers that will further refine your modulation programming: Invert, Transform, Sample & Hold, Lag Processor and Quantizer. These shapers can mean the difference between making a sound great to your ears and making it perfect.

Combined, these included effects meet all the demands of today's audio production process; you'll find two, four and eight band EQ, tube-simulation and distortion effects with the flexible PreAmp-1 plug-in, reverbs, a compressor, a synthesizer-style multimode filter, echo & delay effects, chorus, phaser, flanger, and more.

Feature Summary

Mac OS X support - run AudioDesk on the world's most advanced computer operating system.

Support for multiple MOTU CoreAudio drivers - operate MOTU PCI and FireWire audio hardware products simultaneously with AudioDesk. For example, you can use your MOTU 828 FireWire audio interface together with your MOTU 2408mk3 PCI audio interface.

Support for Mac OS X's Audio MIDI Setup utility - Enjoy universal MIDI system management. AudioDesk shares a common studio setup with all of your Mac OS X MIDI applications for AudioDesk's MIDI Machine Control and MIDI sync features.

Multiprocessor support - AudioDesk now doubles the available processing power for plug-ins on any dual-processor Macintosh.

Collect audio data for backup - The "Save As" and "Save a Copy As" commands have a "Duplicate audio data" option that automatically collects all audio files, fades, crossfades, and PureDSP analysis files associated with the project and puts them together in a folder. It doesn't matter where the original files are: they could be scattered over several hard drives. But AudioDesk faithfully finds them and assembles them into one folder. You can then backup, transfer, compact or otherwise handle the project as a single folder with the complete assurance that all associated files are right there in the folder.

Ten levels of undo - AudioDesk remembers your last ten undo operations so you can feel free to experiment with your editing. The undo history window display the 10-step undo history at a glance and lets you jump instantly to any location in the history.

New plug-ins - All of AudioDesk's included plug-ins have been given a whole new sleek look. And you get several new plug-ins that you'll be able to put to use immediately. The new Multimode Filter provides resonant filter effects, much like a modular synthesizer. The Plate reverb provides exceptionally smooth reverb with up to a minute of reverb time. The Trim plug-in allows you to match gain, alter stereo channel imaging and provides precise metering of audio signals. Quan Jr. provides on-the-fly bit reduction for a wide array of "bit crusher" effects. A new Ring Modulator is also included.

Enhanced menu organization - enjoy greater ease of use and faster operation. For example, all project-related commands, such as adding tracks, are now consolidated into the Project menu.

Commands System - Expanded customizable keyboard shortcuts – AudioDesk’s ‘Remote Controls’ feature has been greatly expanded into the ‘Commands’ window, which lets you assign computer keystrokes to virtually any function in AudioDesk. The Commands window allows you to completely customize your computer keyboard interaction with the software.

Automatic Conversions - AudioDesk can automatically convert audio data wherever necessary to make it conform to the current project's sample rate, sample format and tempo. These new auto-conversion features greatly streamline the process of importing audio quickly into your projects.

MP3/REX/ACID File Import - simply drag MP3 files, REX (Recycle 2) files, or ACID files into AudioDesk to import.

Compact Project - This new command is the ultimate way to get rid of all the unused material in a project and prepare it for transfer or archiving. This command discards takes, gets rid of unused soundbites, compacts audio files, regenerates fades — all to your exact specifications and all in the right order to achieve maximum efficiency.

OMF import/export - AudioDesk supports complete multitrack session interchange with Pro Tools, including track layout, frame-accurate audio region placement and volume and pan automation data.

FireWire video output - monitor QuickTime video via a FireWire device.

Merge Soundbites - quickly combine several soundbites with one easy operation.

Graphic time-stretching - grab the edge of a soundbite with the hand cursor and watch it stretch as you pull it longer or shorter.

Graphic fade handles - Edit fades graphically directly on soundbites in the Edit window. Even graphically edit multiple fades simultaneously. For example, if you needed to make all fades in a track a little longer, you can select all soundbites and then grab one fade to change them all. Fades and crossfades are preserved during editing operations, such as dragging, shifting, compacting or setting the soundbite start time. For example, if you trim the edge of a soundbite, and it has a fade on it, the fade will remain after the trim operation.

Edge-editing multiple soundbites - You can now drag the edges of multiple selected soundbites, moving them relative to one another or making them all snap to the same location.

Stationary play head – AudioDesk’s "Continuous Scrolling" preference causes the playback wiper to stay anchored to the center of the window while the data in the window scrolls behind it. You can opt to view a moving wiper as in previous versions, if you wish.

Wiper-centered zooming – AudioDesk’s playback wiper now serves as the anchor point for zooming (in and out). You can quickly zoom in to a specific location and then zoom back out, and the focus point always remains in view. This makes zooming much faster and more convenient, even during playback and recording.

Lock playback to selection - Make a selection and instantly begin looping it.

Solo exemption - Some tracks, such as aux tracks, should never be muted during soloing. The new Solo Exemption feature lets you protect tracks from being muted.

Soundbite sync points/time stamps - Instantly snap audio regions to their originally recorded time. Export/import time-stamped audio regions to/from Pro Tools and immediately restore their original positions in the track. Adjust soundbite location based on a sync point rather than the beginning or end of the region.

Audio bundles window - Create audio input, output and bus setups and reconfigure the I/O setup in your AudioDesk projects with just a few clicks.

Custom track colors - color-code the tracks in your projects in any way you wish to clarify their grouping and organization.

Dockable tool palette - all of the tools you need are just a click away in the new dockable tool palette, which always stay attached to the edit window at any location of your choosing.

Up to 20 effects inserts per track - today's Macs are getting more and more powerful. What does this mean? More real-time effects processing at your fingertips. AudioDesk now lets you configure up to 20 inserts per track for as much processing as you'll ever need from the many included plug-ins, or your favorite third-party plug-ins.

Measures and beats - AudioDesk now lets you specify time musically in measures and beats, so you can easily record and edit according to musical boundaries. For example, you can now set up the edit grid to snap to quarter notes or eighth notes for easy and convenient musical editing.

Global time formats - instantly change the time format displayed throughout AudioDesk in time rulers, dialogs, and anywhere time is displayed. Choose any time format (Measures/Beats, SMPTE frames, real time or samples) and change it at any time.

Multiple plug-in windows - Open two or more plug-in windows simultaneously.
