     KONA Overview
The Very Finest Capture Cards for Uncompressed SD, HD, 2K & Dual Link HD on OS X

KONA cards are the finest uncompressed QuickTime I/O cards available anywhere. AJA KONA cards were the first capture cards available for Final Cut Pro on Mac OS X - and that innovation and quality have continued to this day. A powerful Mac Pro or G5 desktop PCIe or PCI/PCI-X system, Apple's Final Cut Studio 2™ and a KONA card bring you all the quality and function of a full-featured nonlinear editing suite at a fraction of the price. Clarity in sight and sound with uncompromising performance and reliability - that's the promise of KONA.

It's in the Hardware...

KONA cards offer unprecedented hardware processing power, offering realtime features only found on the highest-end video systems. Depending on what KONA you choose, you will have superior hardware-based up-/down-/crossconversion, HDV and DVCPROHD acceleration and maximum overall performance, speed and stability - critical advantages in a production environment. Work in SD, HD and even 2K. There are no limits to what KONA hardware offers.

...And It's in the Software

The KONA family of cards also offers incredible software inside: custom QuickTime drivers optimized for AJA's hardware, written and supported by AJA. Our KONA software offers unprecedented features, control and usability - targeted for video professionals by video engineers. Additionally, the powerful and intuitive KONA Control Panel simplifies control of KONA's advanced abilities and even supports stand-alone modes.

KONA and Io Utility Software and Add-ons Overview
OSX Utitlities to save time and enhance your workflows
Artful Software

The KONA and Io product lines all offer incredible software to complement the legendary AJA hardware: custom QuickTime drivers optimized for AJA's hardware, plus the flexible and intuitive AJA Control Panel for simple control of your system's many powerful features. Beyond these core software applications, AJA also provides many software utilities that give you advanced options not found on competing capture products. All of these utillities can be downloaded, free of charge, off the

AJA utilities are Universal Binary—they'll work on Mac Pro, Mac Book Pro and older Macs.

AJA VTR Xchange Application
The application allows users to capture, playback and record video/audio to any deck that can be interfaced with AJA’s KONA 3, KONA 2, LS/LSe, LH/LHe, and Io capture/playback products. The software provides RS-422 deck control via a user-supplied cable connecting the KONA or Io and VTR. Other features include frame grabbing and user-selectable support for RP-188.

AJA Data Rate Calculator Application
The AJA Data Rate Calculator is a useful application for determining how much storage space on a harddrive or disk array will be required for a given format and frame rate. In the pictured example, the calculator is used to determine how much storage space would be required for one hour of 720p 59.94 in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). This application may be used on any machine, not just machines that have AJA hardware installed; keeping a copy on a laptop can be a useful tool for doing quick computations to see if storage capacity meets format and frame rate demands.

Note: the AJA Data Rate Calculator is provided as part of the system installation for all KONA cards and the Io HD—it is not a separate download.

AJA System Test
The AJA System Test is a complementary application to the AJA Data Rate Calculator. Where the Data Rate Calculator determines how much drive capacity is required for a given format and frame rate, the AJA System Test can be used to determine if a selected storage device provides sufficient bandwidth for the selected media and its associated format and frame rate. In the pictured example, the drive performance is fairly consistent in terms of write and read speeds as denoted by the graph, but the drive is unlikely to support formats beyond compressed HD (DVCProHD or HDV) and some uncompressed SD formats due to the low performance numbers. The AJA System Test should only be considered one tool when evaluating storage performance—not the sole criteria. Many factors should be considered when selecting suitable storage. For example, the performance of the drive in the cited example might be more than sufficient for an offline editorial workflow.

Note: the AJA System Test is provided as part of the system installation for all KONA cards and the Io HD—it is not a separate download.

AJA TV
The AJA TV application is a simple QuickTime player that automatically enables the video output of the AJA KONA or IoHD products. This can be useful for quickly screening a clip or for easy looping of a QuickTime movie. The simple interface can also be configured to show QuickTime clip information and details. In the example pictured, the media is an Apple ProRes 422 movie that is 720p at 59.94fps as denoted by the information provided below the player.

Note: the AJA TV application is provided as part of the system installation for all KONA cards and the Io HD—it is not a separate download.

AJA KONA QTToDPXTranslator Version 3
This utility takes a 10-bit RGB QuickTime movie (e.g. one that was captured via KONA 3 DualLink) and turns it into a series of DPX files (the DPX file format is a common interchange format for high-end film and graphics workstations).

Note: AJA KONA QTToDPXTranslator is provided as part of the system installation for all KONA cards—it is not a separate download.

AJA KONA DPXToQTTranslator Version 3
This utility does the opposite of the above: it turns a folder full of DPX files into a KONA 10-bit RGB QuickTime movie.

Note: the AJA KONA DPXToQTTranslator is provided as part of the system installation for all KONA cards—it is not a separate download.

AJA Macintosh QuickTime™ Codec v4.0
If you do not have a KONA card in your Macintosh or have an Io HD, but need to access AJA QuickTime media files, you can use this AJA QuickTime codec to work with the files.

>>Download Latest Version

AJA Windows QuickTime™ Codec v1.1.1
This codec allows media captured via KONA 3, KONA LS, or any of the Io's to be used on Windows machines, for graphics work, etc. The rendered files created on the PC can then be used back on your OSX system and output through your AJA product (KONA LS, Io HD, etc.). The KONA PC Codec covers the following compression formats:
  • '2vuy' (aka "Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2")
  • '2Vuy' (aka "AJA Kona 2Vuy Codec")
  • 'v210' (aka "Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2")
  • 'R10k' (aka "AJA Kona 10-bit RGB Codec")
  • 'R10g' (aka "AJA Kona 10-bit Log RGB Codec")

Note: To reiterate, this is a codec, and not a driver for our cards. It is intended to allow PC users to use AJA media captured on a Mac. It is not a driver for use of our KONA or Io hardware in the PC environment.

AJA Control Panel
The AJA Control Panel is a powerful software interface for controlling the AJA hardware whether it is the KONA cards or the IoHD. The AJA Control Panel can be used to configure hardware based up/down/crossconversions among other functions. In the example pictured here, the AJA IoHD is outputting 720p 59.94 HD from SDI 1, HDMI and the component analog output, while simultaneously providing an SD 525i 29.97 output in a letterbox aspect ratio on SDI 2. Users can even access the AJA Control Panel without leaving the application they are working with, such as Final Cut Pro, by simply holding down the Command key while clicking in the Control Panel user interface.

Note: the AJA Control Panel is provided as part of the system installation for all KONA cards and the IoHD—it is not a separate download.
